Chapter 3 - New Year Blues
The boys spend time discussing their New Year’s resolutions, whilst remembering back to their disastrous ‘friendly’ match on Boxing Day, when several players had got injured, one of the Dads had been sent of the pitch by Mr Azalea, and one of the most important players had announced his retirement. Freeman and Will study the retirement note, and make up their minds that they must do something about the situation. Mr Azalea assures them that the player will return. Will, Freeman, Clara and Hardy go up to the field for a practice kickabout. At the end of their game, Hardy’s Dad walks over, looking very threatening, and Michael is spotted at the side of the pitch, looking very unthreatening. Mr Hardy reminds them that they are playing the Merrymen at the weekend. Will and Hardy check their email and find messages from Jaz, Mr Azalea (actually they find 7 messages from him, most of them sent by mistake), and from their opposition team for the Saturday match, requesting a change of time and place for the match. They agree to the change. They meet on Saturday evening at seven p.m., ready for the match, which takes place deep in a forest. Josiane plays in goal, to balance the team in the absence of Michael. Freeman introduces himself to the opposition – Robin, John, Much, and their friends. The game starts, and KidzUnited win it by two goals to one. Towards the end of the game, Hardy goes to retrieve the ball and is confronted by a man on a horse, who challenges the combined team of Robin’s group and Kidzunited to a match. The Sheriff and his colleagues lose the game. Finally, Freeman and Jaz are looking back at the season so far – two wins and one defeat. Not bad really. They hear that the prize for winning the league is tickets to the Champions League final. Freeman drifts off into a dream about football – on another planet.
