Teachers - how to get started

The Teachers Page

The Teachers page you have just left (always visible in the top menu) lists all the things you can do on the site. Always return here if you are uncertain.

Your School

When you registered you signed up to your school - this should be listed in the 'exercise book' panel above.

Your Classes

Kidscapism tries to mimic your school - you as a registered teacher at that school can create classes (start with your own class!). On the teachers' page, you will see a link to Manage Your School. Here you will see your school listed - if no teachers at your school have added any classes, it will be empty apart from a link to add a class to your school. You add classes to your school (and if desired, groups to your classes) here.

When adding a class, you have the option to indicate that you would be interested in collaborating with another class. If you click on this link, your class will be listed on the collaboration page.

Your Students

Classes are initially empty. You add students to your school, and then move them into classes.  (We have removed the option for children to register themselves).

Teachers adding students

On the Teachers Home Page (Manage Students) there are links to allow you to add students to your classes. You can either fill in a box for each student, or you can create a file (in Excel) to hold a large list of students' names - and then import them.

Students do not need external email addresses (they can use our generic student@kidscapism.com email). There is therefore no external access via our system. All contacts (story-writing, email) is under your control and restricted to the classes your students are in.

Moving Students Around

You can move students between classes (adding or removing them) by clicking on Teachers Home Page (Manage Students)

Collaboration

You indicate that your class is willing to collaborate by clicking the box on your class page (click on your class name in the 'exercise book' panel above and go to the 'edit' tab to change this). You are then listed on the collaboration page. You have several steps (see the instructions) before a link is complete, and you can terminate it at any time.

Manage Students

On the Teachers Home Page - Manage Students, there are various tools for managing your students. You can email them (all of them if you wish). You can check the emails they have sent (I tend to warn them I can do this!). You can check whether they have been online, you can print out a listing of the students in your class, you can edit your students' profile (especially if they have forgotten their passwords), and you can potentially delete students completely from the system.

Contact

I am very keen to hear your experiences of using the system - it is new and can develop in ways I have probably not thought of. Please contact me with suggestions. Thanks. Rupert.
